VHF field day
Onto more positive things. This weekend is the VHF NFD and a bunch of us will be active on 2m and 6m from corney fell. We'll be in the single transmitter category and expect a couple of hundred contacts at best and a few gallons of tea and a hundredweight of biscuits. Definitely my kind of contest.
Looking forward to working you all...listen out for MX0WRC

Radio Mobile Online
Its probably not news to many people but whilst I was thinking about a suitable site for the UKAC 144Mhz contest next Tuesday (4th December) I remembered about a coverage prediction programme called Radio Mobile.
Now seeing as things on the internet are steadily replacing things on the desktop I had a go with comparing sites with the model outputs. As a contest novice I am entering in ‘in the spirit of’ contesting. Any site needed to be quite close to home and easily accessed / operated from.
Radio mobile confirmed what you’d expect, the site closest to home that I can get to with the car isn’t the best but its a whole load better that operating from the house. So armed with the knowledge that I’ll get some contacts at least I’ll take the plunge and aim not to be at the bottom of the pile.
The key kit will be
1. A warm coat (its 20.00UTC – 22.00 UTC) – So it’ll be chilly
2. FT817 and extra power supply – Seeing as it runs out of puff within a few minutes
3. Sotabeams 3 element yagi and fishing pole
4. A flask of tea and chocolate hobnobs
The output from a 4w Tx at the Sandwith site is below. More than enough to get a couple of contacts I hope.
We’ll have to see how I get on next week, but if you’re in earshot listen out for the weedy signal from Cumbria (rather than the stronger on from G4VFL, who has nabbed the Corney Fell site – perhaps I should tramp up Scafell Pike to out do him on height!)

Summer Es…where?
Lets just say my entry into the UKSMG Summer Es contest won’t be missed. After spending a few hours putting up antennas and setting up all the equipment in a quiet corner of the mother in laws house last weekend I didn’t get very far. Having had a few easy QSO’s into southern Europe a few days beforehand I had at least some hopes, not high ones but some at least.
Not a single QSO. Not one completed QSO. I could barely hear a station in Paisley and the GB3NGI beacon got weaker and weaker as the weekend went on. I think I’ll have to get a bigger antenna! now how do you go about getting permission for that from your mother in law?
Maybe next year……

Summer contest
I have mostly avoided contests as to me it has the perception of something where 'He who has the largest bank account wins' and the is little room for tiddlers. So to challenge this perception I shall be entering into something that I think / hope will be a bit more relaxed. The UKSMG Summer Es contest might be the highlight of the 50Mhz calendar but for I shall be operating at the most for 6 hours. The likelihood it will be around 3 hours at best as a tiddler station.
I will be operating at best 100W from my IC7000 into my homebrew 50Mhz vertical which so far has escaped the operation in anger mode it needs. Part of the reason for this is to see if I actually enjoy it. The other part is to do something different.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for 6m but have no idea why as my QTH precludes much in the way of 'proper' antennas and so far I have only made a few contacts on the magic band. Most of these contacts were a few years ago when I could put a beam up in the garden for a few weeks. This needs to change in my opinion and this weekend is the best opportunity for me for a while.
So if you happen to be on the magic band, listen out for the tiddler that is my station (operating as GM7KSE as it happens). The contest starts on the 2nd June at 1300Z
