WOTA over Christmas

The thought of going outside as I watch water streaming down the windows in my office isn’t exactly what you’d call inviting (Especially as I got drenched running between two building the other day). But I have spoken to ‘er indoors and she’s granted the permission (albeit verbally) to get out and about over Christmas and New Year for a WOTA / SOTA activation.

Fortunately for me I live near some of the nicest parts of the lake district, most of which are not on the beaten track and are not full to the brim of Gore-Tex clad, pole sporting moving obstacles as I like to think of them when I’m on my bike (Just to clarify this point, I was in a bike race about a month ago and a group of 40 or so individuals who fitted the description refused to allow a group of cyclists past on a road without a chorus of tutting and harumpfff-ing. Instead they took up the entire road. I’ll leave it at that). So we’ve settled on Skiddaw.

Weather permitting, obviously, I will be part of an extended family outing which looks like it’ll be at least 4 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs and that doesn’t count our 2 as they’re a little young for this sort of thing. We’ll be heading up from the car park between Skiddaw and Latrigg and following the tourist route to the summit where I’ll hopefully slope of to Lonscale Fell and Skiddaw Little Man before leaving them to fit in the remaining summits of Carlside, Long Side, Ullock Pike and Dodd.

Its likely we’ll be out either the 29th or 30th December to fit in with other trips out and about. i may even squeeze in another before going back to work, We’ll have to see.

  1. Sounds great, Alex. Hope the weather co-operates. Before I was married I always used to go for a hike on Christmas day to work up an appetite for the turkey and pudding.

  2. I'll post an alert nearer the time just to make sure its practical. The weather at the moment makes me want to stay away from the fells. I took the dog for a walk up Dent at the weekend and it froze my ft817!
