Ladder line or coax?

Simple question do I recable with ladder line or go for an expensive coax when I recable my vertical this summer.

Then there's the other question to balun or not to balun at the antenna end or just at rig end. Clearly my mind isn't made up so anyone with some good advice please let me have it before I get carted off for not knowing my ahem from my elbow. Us mechanicala engineers loose confidence with all the electrickery sometimes!

  1. IMHO - As a vertical is an unbalanced antenna it should be fed with an unbalanced feeder, so coax. Ladder line and open wire feeder need to be in free space or the impedance is effected so running ladder line up the side of a building or along the ground could lead to all sorts of problems. That is not to say it would not work but tuning the antenna cold be a pig.
